The 28 November 2020 Landslide, Tsunami, and Outburst Flood – A Hazard Cascade Associated With Rapid Deglaciation at Elliot Creek, British Columbia, Canada

چکیده

We describe and model the evolution of a recent landslide, tsunami, outburst flood sediment plume in southern Coast Mountains, British Columbia, Canada. On 28 November 2020, about 18 million m3 rock descended 1000 m from steep valley wall traveled across toe glacier before entering 0.6 km2 lake producing >100-m high run up. Water overtopped outlet scoured 10-km long channel depositing debris on 2 fan below outlet. Floodwater, organic debris, fine entered fjord where it produced 60+km altered turbidity, water temperature, chemistry for weeks. The destroyed forest salmon spawning habitat. Physically based models provide real-time simulations event can improve understanding similar hazard cascades risk they pose.

A procedure for making objective preliminary assessments of outburst flood hazard from moraine- dammed lakes in southwestern British Columbia

Existing methods of evaluating the hazard posed by moraine-dammed lakes are unsystematic, subjective, and depend on the expertise and biases of the geoscientist. In this paper, we provide a framework for making objective preliminary assessments of outburst flood hazard in southwestern British Columbia. Our procedure relies on remote sensing methods and requires only limited knowledge of glacial...

Landslide Risk Analysis of Historic Forest Development in the Interior of British Columbia—Challenges Encountered at Fall Creek

In June 1990, the Fall Creek area east of Enderby, B.C., experienced about 66 landslides. These landslides impacted forested slopes and forestry roads, destroyed several BC Hydro transmission towers, damaged and destroyed houses, and cut off highway access to the area, resulting in the evacuation of residents. These slides also destroyed a fi sh farm, several licensed water intakes, and impacte...

Two landslide-dammed lakes in the Cascade Mountains, southwestern British Columbia

Two prehistoric landslides in the Cascade Mountains of southwestern British Columbia blocked streams and impounded lakes that contain remnants of a drowned forest. Radiocarbon ages on drowned trees indicate that Foley Lake formed less than 310 years ago, and Silver Lake formed, or grew greatly in size, 800-1000 years ago. Some trees growing on Foley Lake landslide debris are as much as 152 year...

Algorithms for tsunami detection by High Frequency Radar : development and case studies for tsunami impact in British Columbia, Canada

A shore-based High-Frequency (HF) WERA radar was recently installed by Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) near Tofino, British Columbia (Canada), to mitigate the elevated tsunami hazard along the shores of Vancouver Island, from both farand near-field seismic sources and, in particular, from the Cascadia Subduction Zone (CSZ). With this HF radar, ocean currents can be measured up to a 70-85 km range, ...

The earthquake and tsunami of 1865 November 17: evidence for far-field tsunami hazard from Tonga

S U M M A R Y Historical reports of an earthquake in Tonga in 1865 November identify it as the only event from that subduction zone which generated a far-field tsunami observable without instruments. Run-up heights reached 2 m in Rarotonga and 80 cm in the Marquesas Islands. Hydrodynamic simulations require a moment of 4 × 1028 dyn cm, a value significantly larger than previous estimates of the...
